What is the Research Institute on Addictions (RIA)?
RIA is a research center of the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, and a national leader in the study of alcohol and substance abuse issues. RIA’s research programs, most of which have multiple year funding, are supported by federal and private foundation grants. RIA is located at 1021 Main Street, Buffalo, New York.
What kinds of research are conducted at RIA?
Research includes topics related to a variety of issues, including the following: the etiology, prevention, and treatment of addictions; the role of alcohol and other drugs in violence; needs of special populations, including minorities, women, and youth; family functioning and its relationship to alcohol and substance use; the assessment and treatment of persons arrested for driving while intoxicated; the social, medical, psychological, and neurophysical aspects of addictions; gambling.
Do you offer research training?
RIA has a NIAAA-funded postdoctoral training program for qualified individuals who seek to pursue a career in alcohol research. The program focuses on two primary areas: (1) etiology and course of alcohol use and misuse and (2) treatment of alcohol use disorders. Do you offer treatment services?
Addictions treatment is offered on an outpatient basis in the Buffalo area through RIA’s Clinical Research Center. A culturally diverse staff of licensed and certified professionals from the fields of psychology, medicine, nursing, and alcoholism counseling provides services to clients and their families. For treatment services outside RIA’s area, contact the the Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resources (RADAR) Center in your state, the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAAA), or the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Do you have statistics available on alcohol, drugs, and related subjects?
We do not maintain statistical files for public dissemination, but encourage you to contact the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services in Albany (518-473-3460) or the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol & Drug Information in Maryland (800-729-6686 or 301-468-2600) for statistical information as well as free publications on a variety of topics.
