Current Projects
Sports, Gender, & Adolescent Substance Use (funded by NIDA). Extending previous research by this team into the nature of the relationships between sports and other specific extracurricular activities and substance use and other risky adolescent behaviors (in collaboration with RIA’s Kathleen E. Miller, Ph.D., Michael Farrell, Ph.D. of UB’s Department of Sociology; Donald Sabo, Ph.D. of D’Youville College; and Merrill Melnick, Ph.D., of SUNY College at Brockport).
College Sports, Gender, and Substance Use (funded by NIDA). Examining longitudinal relationships between high school sports participation and substance use as well as developing comprehensive measures of athletic involvement, gender and substance use in college students (in collaboration with RIA Principal Investigator Kathleen E. Miller, Ph.D., Michael Farrell, Ph.D. of UB’s Department of Sociology; Donald Sabo, Ph.D. of D’Youville College; and Merrill Melnick, Ph.D., of SUNY College at Brockport).
Gambling and Substance Use Among Youth in the U.S. (funded by NIMH). Examining the prevalence of pathological gambling among U.S. youth, youth gambling and gambling opportunities, and other problem behaviors (in collaboration with Principal Investigator John W. Welte, Ph.D.).

Co-occurrence of Gambling and Substance Use in the U.S. (funded by NIAAA). Nationwide study of adults and gambling including a geographic analysis of census data and distances from participants’ home to gambling facilities (in collaboration with Principal Investigator John W. Welte, Ph.D. and co-investigator William F. Wieczorek, Ph.D. of Buffalo State College’s Center for Health and Social Research).
